Obituary

Salem

Miss Winifred G. Foley died on March 14, 2008. Born in Salem in 1908 Miss Foley was the daughter of the late Lawrence H. and Mary C. (Olsson) Foley. She was a life-long resident of the city. Winnie had worked for many years in the Essex County Registry of Deeds from which she retired. She was a parishioner of St. James Church and had graduated from St. James Grammar School and High School.
Winifred was a generous, saintly person and was much beloved by family and friends. She was active in St. James parish and it's Sodality. A dedicated daughter and sister she was the hub of her family.

As a young girl, Winnie and her family had their Broad Street home destroyed in the Great Salem Fire of 1914. She recalled living for a while on Salem Common and then moving in with an uncle. Her family subsequently moved to Proctor Street on which street she lived until her death.

Winifred was predeceased by her parents and by her sister Mary and her brothers Lawrence, William J., Robert and Frederick. She is survived by her cousin Robert (Bobby) O'Shea of Rockport and her godson, Leonard Cawley and Leonard's wife, Claire of Salem. Winnie particularly loved Scott Henderson, who knew her all his life and unfailingly cared for her in her later years.

Winnie was God's great gift to her family and friends and she will be missed.

Her funeral will be held on Monday at 10:30 A.M. from the Murphy Funeral Home, 85 Federal St., (cor of North St) Salem to be followed by a funeral Mass at 11:00 A.M. in St. James Church, 161 Federal St., Salem.
