William R. "Mike" Niland, age 90, of Salem died Thursday evening in the Grosvenor Park Nursing Home following a brief illness.
A lifelong resident of Salem, he was born in Salem the son of the late Michael and Ellen A. (Connors) Niland and was raised and educated in Salem Schools. Once Mr. Niland completed his education, he was employed by the National Youth Association completing community improvement projects for the City of Salem until joining the United States Army during World War II.
During his tours of duty Mr. Niland was stationed in the Pacific Theater of Operation primarily in Hawaii and Japan. Following his discharge he was employed by the United States Postal Service in Salem for several years until retiring in 1984. He was well remembered for his kind words and warm smile to all.
Once Mr. Niland retired, he was able to pursue his true passion of golf. A fanatic about his game, he had been a member of the AOH, Division 18 of Salem and its, Golf League. Later, when he lived "downtown" he joined the the Christopher Columbus Society in Salem and played in its' Golf League for several years. At one time he was also an avid bowler.
Mr. Niland is survived by three nieces Ellen Bigney and Dr Susan D. Sampson of Salem and Violet O'Brien of Wayne, Michigan ; five nephews Dr. Robert A. Page of Danvers, W. Brian Page of San Diego, CA and Thomas R. Niland of, San Diego, CA, Gerald Myers of Danvers and Toby O'Brien of Wayne, Michigan.
His funeral will be held on Tuesday, October 11, 2011 at 10:15AM from the Murphy Funeral Home, 85 Federal St., (cor of North ST) Salem to be followed by a funeral Mass at 11:00 AM in St. James Church, 161 Federal ST., Salem. Visiting hours are on Monday from 4:00 pm to 7:00 pm in the funeral home. Relatives and friends are respectfully invited to attend. Interment will be in St. Mary's Cemetery, Salem. Those who wish may make memorial contributions to North Shore Elder Services, 152 Sylvan Street, Danvers, MA 01923-3568.
