William G. Nelson, age 62, husband of Maxine Hopkins, died Wednesday evening August 21, 2013 at the E.N. Rogers Memorial Veterans Hospital in Bedford following a courageous battle with cancer. Born in Beverly, Bill was the son of Mellin G. Nelson of Danvers and the late Ann J. (Morgan) Nelson. Bill was raised in Beverly and graduated from Beverly High School. Following High School, Bill entered the United States Marine Corps and served his Country for ten years, serving during the Vietnam War. He was very proud of his Military service. Being a Marine was a huge part of who he was. He was smart and strong and could fix anything. He left the Marines to come home to help his father run the Liberty Marina in Danversport, where he worked for 10 years.
Bill's favorite place to be in this world was with his family at the Tuxbury Pond Campground in South Hampton, NH. He spent every possible moment at the Campground. He enjoyed feeding and watching the chipmunks and the flying squirrels. You could always find him sitting and relaxing on his deck. He was very skilled and talented at growing Bonsai, and was a member of the North East Bonsai Society in Wenham for over 15 years.
Bill counted attending Boy Scout Camp Philmont in New Mexico as the highlight of his youth. In scout training under scoutmaster Frank Conrad at St. Peters church, Beverly, he earned life Scout and numerous merit badges including God and Country. He worked with a Paleo group excavating the historic Bull Brook site in Ipswich.
Surviving him in addition to his wife are six children, Kimberly Jean Hathaway of Lynn; Cameron, William, Amanda, Connor and Bryce Nelson all of Salem; two grandchildren Haley and Cassidy. He was also the brother of the late Scott M. Nelson.
