William Aaron Millar "Bill", 84, passed away at home on August 12 th , 2021, of natural causes. He was born on February 26, 1937 in Philadelphia PA to William and Esther (Githens) Millar. After Highschool he joined the Navy when he was eighteen, and served for four years. During his time in the Navy, he achieved the rank of MM2, and became a master machinist. After the Navy Bill went on to be a machinist, and a lobsterman.
Bill will be remembered for his love of gardening, the ocean, country music, riding his Harley to his Navy reunions, and watching country westerns. He was incredibly proud of the military, his service on the USS Albany and the USS Gatling. He loved the Boston Red Sox, and he had the gift of gab. Once he started a story you could never get away until the story was done. He also had a fondness for animals. His love of the military fueled him towards volunteering for restoration work on the USS Cassin Young at the Charlestown Navy Yard.
Bill is survived by his wife Emilie (van de Stadt) Millar; his children William A Millar and his fiancée Gina McGrath; his daughter Michele K Millar and Dan New; Douglas E Millar and his significant other Georgia Curtis; his grandchildren William C Millar, Lindsay A Millar, and Douglas E Millar; his in-laws Cornelia Donovan, Nancy Bacigalupo, Willem E van de Stadt and his wife Erin, and Ellen Geary and her husband DJ, his siblings Judith Kerr (Charles), Nancy Coon (John), Stephen Millar (Veronica), and many nieces, nephews, grandnephews and grandnieces. Bill is predeceased by his parents, his first wife Judith (Evans) Millar, his siblings Tom Millar and Glen Millar, his nephew and niece Dennis Boyle and Colleen Boyle, his grandnephew Lucas Boyle and his pet cat Gatling (his buddy).
Visiting Hours will be held on Wednesday, August 18 th at the Murphy Funeral Home, 85 Federal Street, Salem, from 4 PM to 8 PM. A funeral will be held for Bill the next day, Thursday the 19 th , at the Murphy Funeral Home at 10 AM. Burial at Greenlawn cemetery will immediately follow the funeral. All those in attendance are kindly asked to wear a mask, as we are complying with Salem's new masking regulations ahead of the hard date of the 23 rd .
