William Dominic McNeil, 53

William Dominic McNeil, 53, of Peabody, died of cancer on December 19 at the Swampscott home of his mother Rita McNeil surrounded by his loving family. Bill was also the son of the late Dr. John F. McNeil.

Bill's character was defined by his faith and love of family. Billy had an engaging personality with a wonderful disposition and loved people of every persuasion, never criticizing or judging anyone. He had a wonderful smile and always made people feel special. He always remembered his family and friends on holidays and special occasions, sending thoughtful letters and cards. He will forever be remembered for his gestures of kindness.

Billy attended Marblehead High School, Deerfield Academy and Tufts University and was a great athlete. Nicknamed "Butkus" for his bone-crunching tackles, Billy was a star in football, winning many league awards and honors in high school and college. He was inducted into the Marblehead Gridiron Football Hall of Fame. He was also a champion swimmer at the Corinthian Yacht Club and for the Marblehead CYO, holding records that stood for many years. He enjoyed all sports and was a great competitor.

He also had a love for music and was an accomplished pianist. Family and friends enjoyed watching Billy play the piano at home and he loved to perform.

He is survived by his mother Rita McNeil, three bothers, Dr. John McNeil, Robert McNeil, Bart McNeil, 2 sisters, Janet McNeil, and Maura McNeil, 2 sister-in-laws, Catherine McNeil and Susan McNeil, and many nieces, a nephew, aunts, uncles, and cousins.

Visiting hours will be Monday December 22 from 4PM to 8PM at the Murphy Funeral Home Salem, 85 Federal Street,(cor of North St) Salem MA. His funeral will be held on Tuesday, December 23 at 10:15 A.M. from the funeral home to be followed by a funeral Mass at 11:00A.M. to be celebrated at Our Lady Star of the Sea Parish, 85 Atlantic Avenue, Marblehead, MA . In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in his memory to Pioneer House, 2 Washington Street, Peabody MA 01960 or Hospice for the North Shore, 75 Sylvan Street, Suite B-102, Danvers, MA 01923.
