Obituary

William (Will) Stephen Markarian, 90 years old, died on September 15 in the home that he built in Peabody. He resided there for the last 60 years. Family, friends and caregivers surrounded him with love and exceptional care in his final days as he battled Hodgkin's lymphoma. He was able to celebrate his 90" birthday on August 19 with a houseful of family, friends, and neighbors by his side.
He was born on August 19, 1926 in Salem, MA to Virginia (Herdenrian) Markarian and Stephen Charles Markarian. He was the youngest of his deceased siblings Charles C. Markarian, Harry Markarian, and Irene (Markarian) DiPaolo. His father owned and operated an ice cream parlor on North St. in Salem, currently the site of Dot and Ray's restaurant, where Will worked many hours in the family business. It was also a favorite gathering place for Will and his neighborhood friends.
He married Shirley(Kenny) Markarian in Salem on March 25, 1951. He is predeceased by his wife Shirley, who died in 2001, and their son, William D. Markarian, who died in 2010.
Will is survived by his son Stephen and wife Jeri(Boltas) Markarian of Peabody, granddaughters Julie Markarian and her fiancé Max Svec of Brighton, Katie Markarian and partner Sam Sherwood of Beverly. Others include nieces and nephews Susan & Bart Poran, Bruce Markarian, Nancy & Jim Bullock, Diana & Bob DiPaolo, Kathy & Tim Horton, Nancy Kenny, Debbie Kenny, Ray Kenny, sister-in-laws Anna Markarian and Joyce Kenny.
Will attended the Salem schools and after his service as a Corporal in the Army Air Force during World War II, he enrolled at Northeastern University and received a Bachelor's degree in business administration. He worked for Sears Robuck, owned and operated a dry cleaning Co. in Dedham, and finished his employment at Western Electric in Andover.
Will had many interests including fishing, camping with his family, skiing in his younger days, boating, Watching football, Solving Crossword puzzles, gardening, and his favorite pastime of playing golf as he was a longtime member of the Rowley County Club.
Those of us who loved him will forever remember his smiling face and hearty laugh. He brought joy to so many and he will be dearly missed.
His visiting hours will take place on Monday September 26, 2016 from 4 to 7PM at the Murphy Funeral Home 85 Federal St. (corner of North St.) Salem, MA 01970. His funeral ceremony will take place the following morning on September 27, 2016 at 10AM, also at the Murphy Funeral Home with internment to follow immediately afterward at Greenlawn Cemetery 57 Orne St. Salem, MA.
