William P. Gorczyca, age 61, husband of Ann Adams Friedgen, died Friday December 11, 2009 in the Grosvenor Park Nursing Home following a long and courageous battle against prostate cancer.
Born in Salem the son of the late John J. and Genevieve (Fritz) Gorczyca, he was raised on River St in Salem. Bill attended the Bowditch School and was graduated from Salem High School in the Class of 1966 as a very accomplished violinist. He was awarded a scholarship to Boston University to study under Joseph Silverstein (of the Boston Symphony Orchestra). The highest compliment was paid to his talent when he sat First Chair in the All State Orchestra.
His pursuit of music was cut short during the Viet Nam War. Bill enlisted in the United States Air Force, proudly serving his country as the Assistant to the Chief Master Sergeant in Nha Trang. Upon his, his desire to complete his education was realized when he received his Bachelor's Degree in Journalism from UMass Amherst.
Until becoming ill, Mr. Gorczyca had been an Air Export Agent managing routes and rates for international commerce.
In addition to owning several greyhounds over the years, Bill's true passion in life was playing rugby with the Beacon Hill RFC, and being with his friends.
Bill was also an avid golfer, jogger and weight lifter. His laughter and sense of humor will be missed by both family and friends.
In addition to his wife, Ann, Mr. Gorczyca is survived by two sons David Gorczyca of Las Vegas, NV and John Gorczyca and his wife Kim of Chicopee, MA; two brothers John Gorczyca and his wife Kathleen of Merrimack, NH and Tom Gorczyca and his wife Amy of Haverhill; two sisters Katherine McCarthy and her son Kevin of Lynn and Janet Dadoly of Nashua, NH; as well as numerous nieces, nephews and grandchildren..
Funeral arrangements will be private under the direction of the Murphy Funeral Home, 85 Federal St., Salem, MA.
