William S. "Esso" Haines, Jr., husband of Nancy (Bartlett) Haines of Marblehead died at home at the age of 82, Son of the late William S. "Tap" Haines and Shirley (Hinch) Haines, he was a lifelong resident of Marblehead and a graduate of Marblehead High School. "Esso" was a former manager of the Marblehead Supermarket and Century House Epicurean Shoppe, serving over four decades in the food business. He was also employed by Marblehead Savings Bank in his "Golden Years".
"Esso" was a noted Sports official with an active career spanning 32 years in football and baseball. His assignments covered all areas from professional to youth. He also spent many years as Commissioner of officials for football and baseball in the Northeastern Conference. "Esso" was a member of the Gerry VFA, Minor League Baseball Alumni Association and President /Treasurer of the Marblehead Magicians Gridiron Club. He was an Honorary Life Member of the Association of New England Football Officials, North Shore Baseball Umpires Association and Rotary Club of Marblehead Harbor. He was also a Corporator of Marblehead Savings Bank.
He is survived by a daughter, Judith Haines Clark and her husband Scot of Alabama. Lovingly remembered by Susan E. Powers and her husband John, Stephen Parker and his wife Jeannie, Lianne Cappuccio and her husband Frank, Lynne deGrandpre, Laurie Lamarre and her husband Bill. Also all the children and grandchildren.
At "Esso's" request, there will be no visiting hours. Burial Services will be private.
