Obituary

The Marblehead community will be missing a very special person. Virginia "Ginny" Power was known to many as the "unofficial" mayor of Marblehead and an extraordinary friend. She passed away after losing her battle with dementia on February 12, 2020 during her residence at Lafayette nursing home in Marblehead, MA.

Ginny was born on November 4, 1936 in Salem, Massachusetts to Bernice "Bunny" and Michael "Red" O'Meara. She was the second oldest of six siblings. She married James "Nimmy" Power and had three daughters.

She graduated from Salem High School and began her career working as a dental hygienist.

After marrying, Gin & Nim moved into Front St, Marblehead and she began working in the restaurant industry at The Barnacle, Molly Waldo and then Spirit of 76. She quickly graduated from restaurant waitress to operating the food concession at the Marblehead Elks, where her vibrant personality thrived.

After The Elks moved their location Ginny went onto The Porthole Pub where her friendly connections grew. Her connections then led her to Manage at The Danvers Port Yacht Club for years after.

As she decided to slow down her pace in life the town of Marblehead then called her back and she fondly worked at The Eastern Yacht Club, Marblehead.

Although she was born in Salem, Marblehead was her home. Ginny enjoyed giving back to the local community. With her larger than life smile and personality. She and Jim made many new friends and she had great success. She was a familiar face to many even working in retirement for Meals on Wheels through The Marblehead Community Center.

Ginny was filled with life and light. Her creative spirit blossomed as she was a young mother. She enjoyed spending time crafting and creating beautiful ceramics in her own backyard studio on Front Street. She enjoyed participating in the yearly Marblehead Festival of Arts hat contest and was awarded for her creativity. She also was a dedicated volunteer for the Marblehead Festival of Arts for many years.

Ginny's life is celebrated by all that knew her. She is survived by her five siblings, Judy Paugh of Derry, NH., Gayle MacDonald & her husband Bruce of Middleboro, Ma., Brothers Richard, Robert and Ronald. Her three daughters, Tara Gilbert & her husband Bradley Gilbert of Eliot Me., Laurel Perry of Marblehead and Peyton Dixey & her husband Adam Dixey of Marblehead. Ginny will be remembered by her five grandchildren, Madison Gilbert, Devon Gilbert, Grace Perry, Taylor Gilbert and Riley Dixey.
