Valdemiro B. Melo, 81, of Peabody passed away on February 24, 2016. He was the son of the late Alexandrinho and Lindaura Melo of Graciosa, Azores. Valdemiro was born and raised on the island of Graciosa, Azores and immigrated to the United States in 1968 where he began working in the leather shops of Peabody. He eventually retired from GTE Sylvania (Salem) after 24 years as an assembly line packer.
Valdemiro spent many happy hours gardening especially growing grapes to make his own wine. He enjoyed working around the house, his wood stove and firewood, and spending time with his family and especially his grandchildren.
He is survived by his wife Alaide (Silveira) Melo with whom he shared 48 years of marraige, and his son Edward S. Melo and his wife Lisa of Peabody. He also leaves behind two grandchildren; Joseph and Julia. He was predeceased by his sister Laurinda Bettencourt Melo.
Visiting hours will be on Monday, February 29, 2016 from 3:00pm-7:00pm in the Murphy Funeral Home, 85 Federal St. (corner of North St.) Salem, MA 01970. His funeral service will be held Tuesday March 1, 2016 at 10am at Murphy Funeral Home. Interment will be at St. Mary Cemetery Salem, MA.
