Salem….
Thomas J. Oliva, age 94, husband of the late Nancy (DeFrancesco) Oliva, of Salem died early Friday morning in Salem Hospital after a short illness.
Born in Cambridge the son of the late Giovanni and Rosaria (Furnaro) Oliva, he was raised in Boston and graduated from Boston English High School. Mr. Oliva then serviced in the United States Navy and was stationed in Okinawa during World War II. Following his discharge he received his Bachelor's Degree in Business Administration from Northeastern University while working at General Electric in Lynn.
Mr. Oliva later became employed as an Accountant by the former Bank of Boston, now Bank of America, until his retirement.
An avid gardener, Mr. Oliva grew tomatoes and basil which he enjoyed cooking into wonderful dinner for his family while his wife gave piano lessons in their home. A determined individual, he enjoyed his home where he was able to live independently until becoming ill last week. He had been an active parishioner of the former St. Mary's Italian Church in Salem and was a Third Degree member of the Knights of Columbus Veragua Council 76 in Salem.
Mr. Oliva is survived by a daughter Rosalie Young and her husband Christopher of the Shetland Islands, Scotland; three grandchildren Benjamin Young and his wife Nicky of Bedford, England, Kirsten Thompson and her husband Paul of Piha, New Zealand and Robert Young and his wife Jane of London, England; five great grandchildren Charlotte, Fergus, Lilly and Conrad Young, Rumi, Felix and Merlin Thompson and Connor Young.
In addition to his wife, he was predeceased by two brothers Nicholas Oliva and Frank Oliva, USN Retired and a sister Santa Tortorella.
His funeral will be held on Monday at 10:15 A.M. from the Murphy Funeral Home, 85 Federal St. (cor of North St) Salem to be followed by a funeral Mass at 11:00 AM in the Immaculate Conception Church, Salem. Relatives and friends are respectfully invited to attend. Visiting hours will be Sunday from 2 to 6 P.M. Interment will be in St. Mary's Cemetery, Salem.
