Obituary

Theresa E. Miaskiewicz, lifelong resident of Salem, passed away on Saturday, April 6, 2024.  Theresa was the daughter of the late Chester and Anastasia (Zmijewski) Miaskiewicz. She was predeceased by her ten siblings: The Reverend Francis S. Miaskiewicz, D.C.L; the Reverend Stanley Miaskiewicz; Mieczyslaus I; Clementine; Ferdinand; Felix; Mieczyslaus II, who was killed in World War II and who had been repatriated in 2011; Christine, an educator in Salem; Richard F., former Mayor of Jeannette, PA; and Joseph J. Miaskiewicz.

Theresa was a graduate of St. John the Baptist (Polish) School and Ste. Chretienne Academy in Salem. She received her Bachelor's Degree from Emmanuel College in Boston and completed graduate work in many school and universities among which were Salem State University, Emmanuel College, and Lee Institute.

Miss Miaskiewicz was a dedicated educator who served in the Salem School  Department as teacher at the Pickering School and Salem High School.  Subsequent to her retirement, she was elected to the Salem School Committee.  Following her term as member of the Board, she became Chair of the Salem School Building Committee which oversaw the renovation of the Bates School and the construction of the new Bowditch School (now Horace Mann).

Theresa was a certified member of Who's Who in American Education; Who's Who Among American Women and Who's Who in America. She had been active in many community and professional organizations such as the Senate Legislative Education Seminar, Mass Foreign Language Association, the Salem Teachers

Union; Essex Country Teachers and the State, County and Municipal Retirees of Massachusetts.  She was a member of the Massachusetts Federation of Polish Women's Club where she held office as President. Theresa served as President and Secretary of the Massachusetts Business and Professional Women's Club of Boston. She volunteered at the House of the Seven Gables and at the Salem Hospital at the Information Desk. She served as Eucharistic Minister at Salem Hospital and served as member of the St. John the Baptist Church Council.

Theresa is survived by her nephews and nieces: Dr. Joseph J. Miaskiewicz and his wife Wendy of Salem, Attorney Thomas M. Miaskiewicz and his wife Norma, Mrs. Anne Huston and her husband Bill of Cranbury, NJ, Mrs. Judith Matula and her husband Stephen of Salem, Dr. Stasia Miaskiewicz and her husband Henry of

Pittsburgh, PA, Mr. Richard F Miaskiewicz and his wife Marian of Littleton, CO. She was predeceased by one nephew, Christian Miaskiewicz of Pittsburgh, PA.

Her visiting hours will be held at the Murphy Funeral Home, 85 Federal Street, Salem on Thursday, April 11, 2024 from 9:00 am to 10:30 am followed by a Funeral Mass at St. Thomas the Apostle Church, 1 Margin St, Salem at 11:00 a.m.  Burial at St. Mary Cemetery, Salem.  Relatives and friends are respectfully invited to attend.  In lieu of flowers, family and friends are requested to make donations to St. Thomas the Apostle Church, 1 Margin St., Peabody, MA 01960.  For additional information or online guest book please call 978-744-0497 or visit www.MurphFuneralHome.com.
