Obituary
Thalia E Taloumis, age 84 of Salem, died in the Aviv Center For Living on Thursday, November 14, 2013.
Born in Salem the daughter of the late John and Helen (Papapetrou) Taloumis, she was the Valivictorian of her graduating class of Salem High School. She received her Liberal Arts Degree in Arts and Philosophy form Boston University School of Education and then attended New York University and received her Doctorate in in Mathematics and Education. Her early teaching were overseas, teaching for the United States Ari Force in England. Upon her return she taught in the Beverly, Lynnfield and Lexington school systems.
She was an assistant Professor at New York University, Brooklyn College University and Bridgewater State University in Massachusetts.
More recently she was a visiting lecturer at Salem State College and North Shore Community College. She was the recipient of four National Science Foundation Grants at San Jose College, San Jose, CA for a year, two years at New York University as well as the Illinois Institute of Technology in Chicago. She had also received a grant from the School of Education at Columbia University. In her retirement she continued her lifelong passion for learning as a member of the Explorers. She also enjoyed being a member of the Lynn Concert Singers and was a lifelong member of St Vasilios Church in Peabody where she was active with both the St. Vasilios Philopthos Women's Organization and the daughters of Penelope.
Her funeral Services will be held on Friday, November 22, 2013, in the Murphy Funeral Home, 85 Federal St, (corner of North St Salem at 1:00 PM. Relatives and friends are respectfully invited to attend. Visiting hours will be prior to the services on Friday from 11:00 AM to 1:00 PM . Interment will be in Greenlawn Cemetery, Salem. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the St. Vasilios Bell Tower Restoration Fund, 7 Paleologos St, Peabody, MA 01960.
