Susan J. A. Redfield, age 75, passed away peacefully on June 3, 2011, surrounded by the love of her family, in her home after a brief illness. Born in Dover, England she was the daughter of the late Cecil Gross MD and Elsa Gross. She came to the United States and graduated from Tufts University in 1958, where she had met and later married her husband Roger. They then moved to Marblehead, where she has lived ever since.
Susan was an outstanding athlete. She held National records in Masters Track and Field in the 600 , 1000, 1500 yards, the Mile, 800, 3000, and 10,000 meter events for the 45-49 age and had won the Masters division in the 4th annual Bonnie Bell 10K in Boston. In 1987 she appeared in SPORTS ILLUSTRATED "Faces in the Crowd".
Susan coached Girls Track at Marblehead High School for 13 years and also directed the MHS Swim Team. Susan was awarded the Northeast Coach of the Year Award in Girls Track in 1988 and 1989, the Northeast Conference Award of Merit in 1991 and 1992, and was inducted into the Marblehead Boosters Club Hall of Fame in 1997. The Redfield Track in Marblehead was dedicated in her honor.
She had served on the Marblehead Recreation and Parks Commission for eight years and had sung in the Choir of the Old North Church for 13 years. Susan became an artist member of the Historical Society of Early American Decoration and served as program Chair and Co-Chair for 12 years. She was also a member of both the Marblehead Arts Association and Marblehead Historical Society.
She loved running, hiking, cycling, playing tennis, quilting, and above all drawing and painting. Teaching in her art studio gave her tremendous joy.
Susan is survived by her husband of 54 years, Roger and their three children, Jennifer and her husband Joe, Douglas Redfield and his wife Susan, Sarah DelVecchio and her husband Gregg; five adored grandchildren, Kate and Todd Hollingsworth and Alden, Caroline, and Ellis DelVecchio.
Her Memorial Service will be held on Friday, June 10, 2011 at 2:00 PM in the Old North First Church of Christ in Marblehead, 35 Washington St., Marblehead, MA 01945. Those who wish may make memorial contributions to a charity of one's choice or extend and act of kindness to another person. At the family's request there are no visiting hours and burial will be private.
