SALEM — Dr. Stephen D. Hayes, of Salem, died on Saturday, May 28, 2011 surrounded by his family after a long struggle with cancer of the appendix.
He sadly leaves his beloved wife, Clare (Doyle), who has been his soul mate for nearly 50 years along with his two wonderful sons, Steve and Jared, and Betty Saarela who has been devoted to his well being. He also leaves his best friend and brother, Peter, along with his loving family and his mother, Brenda.
His commitment to life was to live it fully with all his dear friends and to share the joy of living in his professional and personal life. He will miss his work and everyone he has worked with but his spirit will live on in everything he has accomplished. The true meaning of his life was to help others feel loved.
Dr. Hayes was a remarkably accomplished individual who held three doctorates and two board certifications. He was a child and adult clinical psychologist, psychoanalyst and addiction specialist who practiced in Salem, Lynn, and Brookline. He was the co-founder of the Lynn Community Health Center where his mission was to integrate behavioral health and primary care medicine to improve the quality of care provided to people in need. His forty years in community mental health led not only to regional and state but also to national recognition.
His true goal in his professional life was to help not-for-profits become sustainable and grow in order to enrich the lives of others. Dr. Hayes was a member of numerous professional organizations and, for many years, the Eastern Yacht Club where he enjoyed his passion for boating.
