IN LOVING MEMORY OF
Sophia
Smith
June 14, 2006 – November 1, 2018
Sophia Smith passed away peacefully at Kaplan House on November 1 st ,2018 after battling DIPG for 20 months. Her last weeks were spent with her family and close friends around her and we were blessed to be able to tell her how very much she was loved and how much she brought to our lives in her short 12 years. The past 20 months were spent travelling to Boston and London in an effort to slow the progression of this heartbreaking disease. Through all of this, surgeries, radiation, and days of pain and discomfort, Sophia's biggest complaint was that she had to leave part of her family behind, but was always grateful that her twin was able to join us for most trips to London, acting as sister, best friend and entertainment. Sophia loved softball, spending time with her cousins and friends, and anything to do with Art-painting, photography, drawing and many many crafts that left her room with little floor space – Sophia always insisted that she was not messy, just a "collector". Her love for sea glass and shells was a passion she got from her grandmother, Betti Babine (Nana Willie) and she loved creating gifts for others-always looking for new ways to display her treasures. The term "to know her is to love her" sounds like a cliché, but this was truly Sophia and anyone who had the privilege of knowing her will attest to this. Sophia didn't just say hello to those she loved, she had to hug you and if you were having a bad day, the hug was tighter, her beautiful smile wider. This was the case with everyone. Sophia just loved to make others happy-each year she looked forward to serving Thanksgiving dinner to the Council on Aging, at the Masons-she loved spending time with Louise and Kathy, the Masons , and her sisters and friends bringing cheer to many many seniors-this day was more important to her than the actual holiday and was a perfect way to sum up Sophia. She was so quick witted and silly, never failing to make us laugh with the sarcasm that not all were lucky enough to witness
Sophia leaves behind her parents David and Jennifer (Babine) Smith, her twin(and best friend) Annabelle and sister Tessa, both who loved her and selflessly endured these twenty months that forever altered their lives. She also leaves her dog coco and many Aunts and Uncles – Paul and Lindsey Burke, Susan Babine and Doug Gordon, Ned Babine, Julie Castner, Bob and Martina Babine, Peter and Krista Babine, and Stephen Smith, Her grandparents Larry and Jeannie Smith and her two other best friends Katie Deiana and Ellie Payson.
She had many cousins who loved her so much and brought so much joy to her-Molly Burke, Olivia Babine, Lia Castner, Samantha and Madi Babine, Bryce and Brady Babine, and Madelaine, Zachary and Dylan Smith.
She is predeceased by her grandparents Robert Babine, Betti Babine and Cousins Allie and Krista Castner and Casey Burke who are no doubt embattled in a game of Yahtzee or Uno.
And finally she leaves her "5 honest ladies" the women that took her under their wings from day one as if she were their own daughter, who travelled across the country for her and made it clear that no request was too big. They, along with this amazing town and countless strangers put their arms around us and let us just worry about loving Sophia.
