Swampscott
Sophia (Gianni) Hashem, age 92 wife of the late George A Hashem, formerly of Calabrese St, Salem, died on Tuesday, Sepember 24, 2013 at the Bertram House of Swampscott surrounded by her children.
Born in Haverhill, the daughter of the late Vincent and Lena (Bova) Gianni, she was raised by her mom and stepfather Frank Gianni following her dad's unexpected death. Raised in Lynn's "Brickyard" section, she was known as the "junior mother" at home helping with her younger siblings. Following her attendance at Lynn Classical High School, she worked in the local shoe shops.
At the outbreak of World War II, Mrs Hashem changed jobs to work at General Electric and support the War effort. Following the war she was "set up" on a blind date, and met her late husband and married. A devoted stay at home mom, she enjoyed gardening, needlepoint and baking for the family. She also enjoyed day trips to Salem Willows with family and occasional trips to Boston but most of all loved to dote on her grandchildren.
Mrs. Hashem is survived by two children John Hashem and his wife Suzanne of Groveland and retired City of Lynn Librarian, Nadine Mitchell of Lynn, a brother James Gianni of Peabody; two sisters Rose "Dolly" Keefe of Lynnfield and Catherine "Kitty" Grant of Lynnfield and Nina Gianni of Maine; three grandchildren, Kathleen Hashem of Salem, Anthony Hashem of Groveland and Jason Hashem and his wife Sarah of Haverhill and two great grandchildren Nadia and Nicholas.
She was predeceased by two brothers, Frank and Nero Gianni.
Her funeral will be held on Saturday, September 28, 2013 at 9:15 AM from the Murphy Funeral Home, 85 Federal St (corner of North St) Salem to be followed by a funeral Mass at 10:00 A.M in St. James Church 156 Federal St. Salem. Relatives and friends are respectfully invited to attends. visiting hours will be on Friday from3PM to 7PM in the funeral home. Interment will be in Greenlawn Cemetery, Salem.
