Shirley L. Vassy age 83 wife of the late Peter Vassy, who predeceased her in 1990, died Wednesday evening in the North Shore Medical Center following a brief illness.
A lifelong resident of Salem she was born in Salem, the daughter of the late Charles and Leona (Kiley) Felton. Following her education at St James Grammar and High School, Mrs. Vassy married her late husband April 17, 1949 and raised her family. A devoted wife and loving mother, she was involved in her children's and grandchildren's activities and sports and was the first women President of the Salem High School Boosters Club. She was a longtime, active parishioner of the Immaculate Conception Church in Salem where she had been active for several years in the church bizarre and Bowling League
Mrs. Vassy later became employed as a manager for Systems Automation in Wakefield for several years until her retirement. A member and officer of the Salem A.A.R.P, Chapter 2454 she loved to travel as well as plan trips and tours for members.
She is survived by three children Cathleyne Knight and her husband Rodney of Warner, NH, Mark P Vassy and his wife Tina of Peabody, and Lisa A Fraser and her husband Gary of Salem, a brother Irving Felton of Salem; four sisters Anne Starke of Peabody, Pat LeClerc of Salem, Barbara Harlow of NH and Karen Bettencourt of FL; nine grandchildren Jesse, Danny and Cameron Fraser, Marcie Lee Vassy, Trevor, Billy, Sara, Matthew, and Michael Vassy, and one great grandchild Gavin Fraser and many nieces and nephews.
She was predeceased by a son Michael W. Vassy this past January.
Her funeral will be held on Monday, March 29, 2010 at 9:15 A.M. from the Murphy Funeral Home, 85 Federal St., (cor of North St) Salem to be followed by a funeral Mass at 10:00 A.M. in the Immaculate Conception Church, 15 Hawthorne Blvd, Salem. Relatives and friends are respectfully invited to attend. Visiting hours will be Sunday from 2:00 PM to 6:00 PM in the funeral home. Interment will be in Puritan Lawn Memorial Park, Peabody.
