Santo F. "Sonny" Collorone, age 84 of Salem died unexpectedly at home WednesdayFebruary 17, 2010. He was predeceased by his wife of 58 years, Angelina L. "Angie" (Ingemi) Collorone in 2007.
Born and raised in Boston one of 24 children of the late Diago and Josephine (Razza) Collorone, he was employed as a shipfitter by Bethlehem Steel until joining the United States Navy in May of 1944. A decorated veteran, Mr. Collorone had been stationed in the European, African and Middle Eastern theaters of operation.
After his discharge, he became employed by Necco Candy until moving to Salem working for Salem Olde Fashioned Candy as well as the Liberty Tree Mall where he was a special police officer for the Town of Danvers. A talented and gifted artist he also painted murals for the Liberty Tree Mall which included Paul Revere's House, Paul Revere's Horse as well as the Cutty Sark. He was also a skilled craftsman doing wood carvings, sculptures and taking care of his home.
Later, he was employed as a security guard for the Liberty Tree Mall and the East India Mall inSalem until his retirement.
Mr. Collorone was a dedicated husband and loving father caring for his wife and family. He also who enjoyed cooking and was well known for his cookies.
He is survived by seven children Richard Santo Collorone and his wife Joanne of Danvers, Angela Forrestire of Salem, Patricia Akatyszewski and her husband John of Salem, Barbette Louise "Kyrah" Hale of Rutland, VT, Dominic Joseph Collorone of Salisbury Beach, Joseph Michael Collorone and Charlene "Shelly" Frances Collorone of Salem; a sister Mary Guisto and her son John of Danvers; eight grandchildren Eric, Scott, Judy Lynn, Adam, Krisheana Lynnaca, Skylar Lynn, Peter and Shantell; one great grandchildren Gerenzo and many nieces and nephews.
His funeral will be held on Saturday, February 20, 2010 at 10:00 A.M. in the Murphy Funeral Home, 85 Federal ST (cor of North St) Salem. Relatives and friends are respectfully invited to attend. Visiting hours will be Today, Friday from 4:00 P.M. to 8:00 P.M. and Saturday morning from 9:00 A.M. to 10:00 A.M. in the funeral home. Interment will be in St. Mary's Cemetery,Salem.
