Sandra (Curtis) Callaghan, age 72, loving wife of 46 years to the late Jeremiah "Jerry" Callaghan, died at the Essex Park Rehabilitation and Nursing Center in Beverly following a long illness. Born in Marblehead, Mrs. Callaghan was the daughter of the late John and Florence (Smethurst) Curtis. She was a life long resident of Marblehead and graduated from Marblehead High School.
Following High School, Mrs. Callaghan was employed with John Hancock Insurance, where she met her husband Jerry. They married in 1965, and after a brief time of living in Roslindale, they moved back to Marblehead to raise their children. Mrs. Callaghan was employed with the Town of Marblehead for over 30 years. She started working career part-time with the school department, transferring full time to the Assessor's Office and retired from the Building Inspectors Office.
Mrs. Callaghan was very active with her MHS Class of 59 classmates. Together they spent countless hours organizing wonderful Class Reunions. She was an avid knitter and enjoyed making sweaters, mittens and hats for her children and grandchildren. She was also a great sense of support for her husband's business, JP Callaghan Plumbing and Heating. She enjoyed her daily walk "around the ferry" with her husband.
She is survived by two children, Sheila Callaghan and her husband Kevin Scheeler of Wakefield and Kevin and his wife Tawny Callaghan of Marblehead; a brother, William Curtis and his wife Ruth of Salem, two sisters in law Caroline Curtis of Marblehead Sheila Callaghan, S.N.D of Woburn, two brothers in law William Callaghan and John Callaghan both of West Roxbury. She was also the cherished grandmother of Patrick, Kristen, Derrick, Dylan, and Emma who all loved and adored her, her best friends from childhood Judy Cuzner and Josie Crowley and many nieces and nephews. She was also the sister of the late John "Stu" Curtis and Richard Curtis.
Her funeral will be held on Wednesday, March 12, 2014 at 11:00 AM in the Old North Church, 35 Washington St., Marblehead. Interment will be held at Waterside Cemetery, 294 West Shore Drive, Marblehead. For those who wish, memorial contributions may be made to Care Dimensions, 75 Sylvan St., Ste B-102, Danvers, MA 01923.
