Obituary

S. Steve Salvo, age 88, of Salem, MA died on Sunday, February 9, 2014 at the Rosewood Nursing and Rehabilitation Center in Peabody, following a brief illness.
Steve, as he was known to his friends, was the devoted husband of Patricia M. (Potter) Salvo. He was the son of the late Frank and Maria (Rizzotti) Salvo.
Steve was a life-long resident of Salem and attended Salem Public Schools, graduating from Salem High School in 1944. He attended Salem State College, where he earned a Bachelor's of Science Degree in Criminal Justice, as well as a Master's of Education Degree in Guidance and Counselling. He was also a graduate of the former Salem Commercial Business School.
Before his retirement in 1989, Steve worked for many years as a Supervising Investigator for the Massachusetts Alcoholic Beverages Control Commission. He was also formerly employed as a Truant Officer for the Salem Public Schools and was a Salem Police Officer for over 16 years, where he served for a brief period with his brothers Ralph and Anthony Salvo. Steve also owned and operated Steve's Auto School for several years.
Steve was very well known in state and local political circles. In 1969 he was elected to the Salem City Council as a Councilor-at-Large, and in 1973 he was elected Council President by his peers. He also served on the Salem School Committee prior to his election to the City Council. In 1976 Steve was elected to the State Democratic Committee for the Second Essex Senatorial District, representing the communities of Salem, Danvers, Peabody and Beverly. He was later appointed to serve as a member of the Security Staff at the 1980 Presidential Democratic Convention in New York City.
A veteran of World War Two, Steve served in the Navy and was stationed on the Okinawa Islands. He was a life-long member of the Christopher Columbus Society.
Besides his loving wife Pat, to whom he was married for 66 years, he is survived by his children: Stephen F. Salvo, and his wife Millicent of Newbury, MA, Dana A. Salvo, and daughter-in-law Dawn of Gloucester, MA, Joyce P. Salvo of Salem, MA, and her companion Thomas Lowry of Newburyport, MA, and Timothy J. Salvo, and his wife Amy of Danvers, MA. Steve also leaves eight grandchildren including: Leah, Lisse and Jake Salvo, Jahna and Simone Salvo, and Tiana, Brielle and T. J. Salvo. He is predeceased by his granddaughter, Joelle Salvo.
Steve was hard working, generous and kind. Among his hobbies and interests Steve loved to work in his garden, and he also enjoyed boating and fishing. But more than anything else Steve had a genuine love for his family which included not just his wife Pat, his sons and daughter and their children, but also his siblings and his many nieces and nephews. Steve will be remembered for his warm heart and caring personality. He will be missed by his family and friends and his legacy will live on through all those who loved him.
Steve is also survived by his sister Beatrice Menici of Peabody, widow of Carl Menici, brother Anthony V. Salvo, former Mayor of Salem, and his wife Lillian of Salem, sister Loretta Nolan, and her husband Frank of Danvers, and many nieces and nephews. He is predeceased by sisters Pauline Lojko, and her husband John, Josephine Sultzbach, and her husband David, and brother Ralph F. Salvo, and his wife Catherine.
ARRANGEMENTS: Visiting hours will be held on Wednesday, February 12, 2014 from 4:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. at the Murphy Funeral Home, 85 Federal Street, Salem, Massachusetts. A service will be held at Murphy Funeral Home for family and friends on Thursday February 13, 2014 at 10:00 a.m., followed by interment at Waterside Cemetery.
