Ruth K. Simons, age 99, died early Wednesday morning, July 25, 2012 , in the Devereux House Nursing Home, Marblehead following a long illness.
Born in Salem , the daughter of the late Stephen H. and Ellen (Canty) Simons, she was educated in Salem schools until her family moved to Beverly . Miss Simons then attended Beverly schools, and was graduated from Beverly High School . Following her graduation from Salem State University (Salem State Teacher's College) in the class of 1932, Miss Simons received her Master's Degree in Education from Boston University,and then began a long career in education.
Ruth taught at the Centerville School in Beverly where she later served as the school Principal. She later was a teacher and reading specialist in the Lynn School System and retired as a professor from Salem State University's Education Department in 1974. In her retirement, Miss Simons remained active in education for the Archdiocese of Boston Office of Spiritual Development.
For many years, Miss Simons enjoyed spending the summer in Sunapee, NH, with members of her family.
She is survived by four nieces and nephews: David J. and his wife Ann Cronin of Woburn , Ann Misoda and her husband Paul of Marblehead, Mark Panza and his wife, Mary of Dublin, Ireland and Ronald Simmons and his wife Nancy of Beverly, and a sister-in-law, BJ Simmons, of Englewood, FL., as well as many great- nieces and great-nephews.
She was predeceased by her two sisters, Anna Panza and Mary Cronin, two brothers, John Simons and Harry Simmons, and three nieces, Ruth Ogden, Donna Shipp and Marilyn Beaulieu.
Her funeral will be held on Monday, July 30, 2012 at 9:15 AM from the Murphy Funeral Home, 85 Federal St. (cor of North St) Salem to be followed by a funeral Mass at 10:00 AM in Our Lady Star of the Sea, 85 Atlantic Ave, Marblehead, MA 01945. Relatives and friends are respectfully invited to attend. Visiting hours will be on Sunday from 4:00PM to 7:00 PM . Interment will be in St. Mary's Cemetery, Salem .
