Rosemary D. "Rose" (Welch) Gilligan, age 79 beloved wife for 47 years of Attorney J. Joseph Gilligan formerly of Salem, of Bridgton, ME died at Bridgton Hospital early Monday morning.


Born in Salem the daughter of the late Norman J and Margaret (Desmond) Welch, she was educated in Salem Schools and graduated from Salem High School, Class of 1945. Mrs. Gilligan then received her BA degree from Regis College, Class of 1949 and her Master's Degree in Education from Boston University, Class of 1951.


Mrs. Gilligan then became a teacher for the City of Salem at the Pickering School. Later she was appointed as Director of the City of Salem Reading Program for Kindergarten to Eighth Grade for many years. As an administrator she also continued her passion of teaching. Remedial reading for students in grades 5 to 8 as well as teaching in "summer school" sessions.


She was a longtime, active parishioner of the Immaculate Conception Church in Salem and a member of the Catholic Daughters of America. She enjoyed cross country skiing and spending time in Bridgton, Maine where she and her husband relocated to following her retirement to in 1989.


In addition to her husband, Mrs. Gilligan is survived by four children, Kevin and his wife Christine Gilligan of Marblehead, Salem Police Department Captain, Attorney Brian J. Gilligan and his wife Donna of Salem, Meghan Rosemary and her husband Michael Perrson of Danvers and Joe and his wife Jen Gilligan of Beverly; a sister Margaret Martin of Wakefield, NH; nine grandchildren Corey, Zachary, and Spencer Perrson, Victoria, Trevor, Jack, McKenna, Jared and Mallory Gilligan and many nieces and nephews.


She was predeceased by two brothers Norman and James Welch.


Her funeral will be held on Friday at 9:15 A.M. from the Murphy Funeral Home, 85 Federal ST (cor of North St) Salem to be followed by a funeral Mass at 10:00 A.M. in the Immaculate Conception Church, Hawthorne Blvd, Salem. Relatives and friends are respectfully invited to attend. Visitation will be on Thursday from 5 to 8 PM in the Murphy Funeral Home. Interment will be in St. Mary's Cemetery, Salem.
