Obituary

SALEM, MA and COCOA, FL— Robert W. Vaughan, 91 passed away peacefully on November 2 at home with the blessing of his loving family. He was the devoted husband of Linda (Hanscome) Vaughan. Born in Lynn, he was the son of H. Weston Vaughan and H. Ellen (Gibbins) (Vaughan) Gosselin and step-son of Arthur Gosselin. He was raised and educated in Lynn.

Leaving Lynn English High School in his senior year to join the Marines. Many years later, at a moving ceremony at the Lynn Auditorium, Bob finally received his diploma along with others who left school early to serve their country. On February 19, 1945, Bob was in the first wave of Marines to land on the beach at IWO JIMA where so many of our servicemen were lost, but he was there on February 23 for the famous raising of the flag by a Navy corpsman and five Marines on Mount Suribachi.

After the service, and having played in the Marine band, Bob formed his own band to play at weddings and functions. He was very accomplished on the Alto sax, the baritone sax and the organ. He was a buyer for Almys Department Stores for many years then became a salesman for Exquisiteform Industries. After retirement he worked 10 years for Northshore Mall as a security guard.

In addition to his wife, with whom he shared 47 years of marriage, he is survived by his beloved children, Richard Hatfield of Cocoa, Fl., Jeffrey Vaughan of Salem, Tammy (Vaughan) Smith and her husband, Bill of Hyannis, and Peter Vaughan and his wife Deb (Jarnes) Vaughan of Los Angeles, CA.   He was papa to grandchildren Mason and Harrison Vaughan and Abby and Michael Smith.  He was predeceased by his sister, Barbara McCabe and his daughter- in- law, Amy (McDonough) Vaughan.

His visiting hours will be held at the Murphy Funeral Home, 85 Federal St.,(cor of North St.) Salem on Friday, November 11, 2016from 3:00 p.m. to 7:00 P.M.  His Funeral Service will be held on Saturday November 12, 2016 at the Murphy Funeral Home at 11:00 A.M.  Interment will be at Greenlawn Cemetery, Salem,  Relatives and friends are respectfully invited to attend.
