August 23, 1939 – January 7, 2017
Danvers – Formerly of Salem, Robert J. "Butch" Stewart, age 77 years, husband of Frances (Zavaglia) Stewart, passed away Saturday January 7, 2017 at the Lawrence Memorial Hospital following a long illness. Born and raised in Salem, he was the son of the late Robert L. and Nita (Bennett) Stewart.
He graduated from the Salem Vocational High School in the class of 1958, and after graduating served in the United States Army for 3 years active and 3 years in the reserves.
Butch first worked at the former O'Meara Pontiac in Beverly as a mechanic, and later was a partner in the Stewart & Dupuis Service Station for several years, in downtown Salem. He also worked for the former Colonial Cadillac in Danvers for over 35 years until his retirement , and was known by many as "Mr. Cadillac".
During his working years, and after his retirement, he and Frannie traveled to many places, Las Vegas, Florida, Texas and went on several cruises. Butch took many trips on his motorcycle with his motorcycle buddies. He was also an avid hunter and was a member of the Danvers Fish and Game Club and the NRA for several years. He was a parishioner of St. Anne Church in Salem.
In addition to his wife with whom he shared 50 years of marriage are his 3 children, Debra A. Stewart of Salem, Sandra L. Stewart of Beverly and Robert "Butch" Stewart and his wife Dawn of Georgetown. His sister Gloria Hilder of Rochester, NH, 3 grandchildren, Alyssa Stewart (who was Gramp's sweetheart) of Salem, and Derek and Todd Stewart (his buddies who could do no wrong in Grampy's eyes) of Georgetown. He was predeceased by his sisters Gerry Murray, Barbie Dalton, Carol Casey and his brother Raymond Stewart.
His visiting hours will be held at the Murphy Funeral Home, 85 Federal St. (Corner of North St.) Salem on Wednesday, January 11, 2017 from 4:00 p.m. to 8:00 P.M. His Funeral Service will be held at the Funeral Home on Thursday January 12, 2017 at 11:00 A.M. Relatives and friends are respectfully invited to attend. Interment will be held privately. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Alzheimer's Association, 480 Pleasant St, Watertown, MA 02472.
