Obituary

Robert S. "Bob" Goodwin, 92, of Salem, died Friday, May 25, 2018 at Care Dimensions Hospice House in Lincoln, MA after a long valiant battle with COPD. He was the loving husband of the late Catherine M. "Kay" Goodwin for 48 years.

Born in Beverly, Massachusetts on June 4, 1925 to the late Charles and Lucy (Davis) Goodwin, Bob graduated from Beverly High School and enlisted in the US Navy in 1943.  A proud World War II veteran, Bob served as an electrician's mate on the battleship USS New Mexico BB 40 and as member of the commissioning crew aboard the USS Pocono AG 16.  Following his military service, Bob married, moved to Salem and worked as a repairman and toll test technician for New England Telephone for nearly 40 years before retiring.

A dedicated father, grandfather and great-grandfather, Bob always emphasized the importance of family, telling his five children often as they grew up "I don't need gifts; I just want for you all to get along".  Bob never met a stranger; he could chat for hours with folks he just met. Bob enjoyed camping with his family for many years. After retirement he enjoyed traveling, going out for fried clams or lobster, and spending time on his computers.

Left to cherish his memory as they 'get along' are Bob's five children Karen Gannon and her husband Larry Gannon of Dighton, MA; Nancy Dorfman and her husband Marty Dorfman, of Danvers, MA; Susan Joinson and her husband Brian Joinson, of Bristol, RI; Robert Goodwin of Bristol, RI; and Joyce Maillet of Tilton, NH as well as his grandchildren Isaac Ball of Joint Base MDL, NJ; Joshua Gannon, of Medford, MA;  Kate Gannon of Worcester, MA; Laurie Ball of Riverside, RI; Kelly Dorfman of Danvers, MA; Emily Ball of Bristol, RI; Patrick Maillet of Kentucky; and Brian Dorfman of Danvers, MA as well as 3 great-grandchildren. Bob was predeceased by his three brothers Halstead, Charles "Phil", and Chester Goodwin and his three sisters Mary Goodwin, Helen Hartley, and Evelyn Goodwin.
