Robert Michel "Pierre" Rumpf, age 81, loving husband of Anne Marie (Kearns) Rumpf of Marblehead died Friday, February 29th in the Kaplan Family Hospice House, Danvers after a valiant battle with cancer.
Born in St. Cloud, France, the son of the late Robert and Marthe (Rabold) Rumpf he later resided in Paris. In 1941, Mr. Rumpf moved to Saranac, NY and graduated from Saranac High School in the Class of 1943. He later received his Bachelor of Science Degree from Harvard University in the Class of 1947 and his Master of Science Degree from Lehigh University in the Class of 1949.
During World War II, Mr. Rumpf proudly served as a Chief Brigadeer in the 1st Detachment of French Volunteers based in North Africa.
His career as a structural engineer began at Jackson and Moreland in Boston and later at Anderson Nichols.
In 1957 he established his own firm Robert M. Rumpf and Associates in Boston and later in Salem.
Mr. Rumpf was a member of the Boston Yacht Club, Marblehead, the Stonehouse Club, Little Compton, RI and the Society of Civil and Structural Engineers. A former member of the Corporation of Morgan Memorial he was also a former member of the Harvard Club of Boston and the Harvard Faculty Club.
In addition to his wife he is survived by four children by a previous marriage, Eric Rumpf of Salem, Brett Rumpf and his wife Annette of Somerville, Pierre Rumpf of Manchester and Caitlin Rumpf of Essex; four grandchildren Katie, Matthew, James and Christina of Somerville; a sister Edith Stessel of Chapel Hill, NC.
He was predeceased by a sister Dinah Webster.
At his request, private memorial service are under the direction of the Murphy Funeral Home, 85 Federal St., Salem.
