Obituary

Robert David Mulligan Sr., age 91, resident of Salem passed away peacefully on June 23, 2019 after a brief illness.  He is thankful to have spent his last hours on Earth surrounded by his loving family.

Bob is predeceased by his parents, Frank and Margaret (Lannon) Mulligan and his sister, Madeline.

Bob attended St. John's Prep, departing before graduation to enlist in the U.S. Navy where he served aboard the USS Chicago ( CA-136) during the Occupation of Japan.

He married the love of his life, Nancy Marie Jennings of Salem on November 30, 1957.

Bob joined the U.S. Bureau of Prisons as a Correctional Officer in 1957, serving at the Federal Correctional Institution (FCI) Danbury, CT., the Federal Prison Camp (FPC) Safford, AZ., FCI Sandstone, MN., and FCI Memphis, TN.  He retired in 1983 as Superintendent of Industries and returned to his hometown of Salem.  In addition to his career in the Bureau of Prisons, he served as the Deputy Chief of the Germantown Volunteer Fire Department in Danbury, CT and worked as a Security Officer at the Bank of Bartlett, TN.  Upon his return to Salem, he served as a Security Officer at the Salem Hospital for several years before retiring to spend time with his family.  He was 3 rd Degree member of the Knights of Columbus, Salem, and a longstanding member of the American Legion Post in Sandstone, MN.

Bob is survived by Nancy, his loving wife of 62 years, his brother Frank and his fiancé Charlotte of Topsfield, his son Robert of Salem, his son Kevin and his wife Margaret of Beverly, his daughter Patricia Lampl and her husband David of Fayetteville, GA.  He was the proud grandfather of Margaret, Patrick, Johannah, James and Sean.

Visiting hours will take place on Thursday June 27, 2019 from 4:00 PM to 7:00 PM at the Murphy Funeral Home, located at 85 Federal St. Salem. A funeral mass will be held on Friday June 28, 2019 at 10:00 AM at the Immaculate Conception Church, located at 15 Hawthorne Blvd Salem. Burial will follow the mass at St. Mary's Cemetery located at 226 North St. Salem. In lieu of flowers, donations in Bob's memory may be made to Saint Jude's Children's Research Hospital, 501 St. Jude Place, Memphis, TN 38105 or a charity of your choice.
