Robert F. Hughes, age 74, husband of the late Judith (Homan) Hughes of Salem died unexpectedly Friday morning, April 2, 2010 in the Shaughnessy Hospital Salem.

Born at home in Salem the son of the late John J. and Bessie A (Brennan) Hughes he was educated in Salem Schools. Mr. Hughes served four years in the United States Navy. One year was spent aboard the USS New Jersey (BB-62) in Korea as well as the USS Salem CA-139. Following his discharge from the Navy, Mr. Hughes began his career with Mass Electric in the Mail Room and eventually became a member of the management team until his retirement 17 years ago as head of Transportation. Mr. Hughes was past President of the Brotherhood of Utilities Workers (B.UW) Local 317 for 13 years. He was the National Vice President of the B.U.W for eight years. He also spent several years operating his private investigation business.

Mr. Hughes was a life member of the American Legion and the Veteran's of Foreign War, the AOH Division 18 in Salem and the Italian Community Club (I.C.C) of Beverly.
In his retirement he pursued his interest in writing and following the death of his late wife, completed his published book "The Cercones"

A loving father he is survived by two sons Brian Scott Hughes and his fiancée Dawn Ewing of Salem with whom he resided and Michael Patrick Hughes and his fiancée Gail Van Durme of Salem; one grandson Michael Damien Hughes of Salem; a brother John "Jack" Hughes of Salem; a sister Dorothy L'Abbe of Peabody and many nieces and nephews.

He was four sisters Eleanor Conway, Elizabeth "Betty" Claveau., Anna Burgess and Mary L'Italien and a brother William "Billy" Hughes.

Relatives and friends are respectfully invited to attend his funeral service will on Wednesdayat 10:00 AM in the Murphy Funeral Home, 85 Federal St. (cor of North St) Salem. Visiting hours will be Tuesday from 4:00 P.M. to 8:00 P.M. Interment will be in Greenlawn Cemetery, Salem.
