Obituary

Salem - Robert E. Grant, 93, passed away peacefully with his family by his side on Wednesday, May 8, 2019 at the John Bertram House in Salem.  Robert was the son of the late Ida (Rochford) and Charles Grant.

Robert was born in Beverly, Massachusetts and moved to Salem, Massachusetts when he was eight years old.  When he attended Salem schools, he played baseball.  Robert had a great passion for the Red Sox that he carried throughout his life. After he graduated from Salem High School, Robert went on to enlist in the Navy and served his country on the USS LaPrade D.E.-409 Destroyer Escort.

When Robert returned home from his service, he attended Boston College and majored in Economics while working at a bank in Boston. During that time, he met the love of his life, Genevieve (Tarnowski) and they were married in 1951. They resided in Salem and started their family.

His service to his country continued as he changed career paths to serve the Commonwealth as the First Assistant Clerk Magistrate in the Salem District Court.  Robert served in that position for nearly 40 years.

Outside of his work, Robert was heavily involved in the Salem community.  He was also an active member of the Immaculate Conception Church and of the Secular Order of Carmelites in the Community of St. Teresa of the Andes, Danvers, MA.  He enjoyed sharing his time with his close friends at the Salem Diner in the Johnny Pesky Breakfast Club.  His hobbies included walking on the Salem Common, attending the Explorers Club at Salem State University, reading, and spending time with family.  He was very proud of his Irish heritage and enjoyed singing Irish songs.  Above all, Robert will be dearly missed by all who knew him as a dear friend and a loving father.

Robert leaves behind: his daughter Kathleen McKanas and her husband Alfred of Middleton, his daughter Maureen Crooker and her husband Douglas of Hampstead, NH, his son Kevin Grant and his wife Louann of Salem, his son Paul Grant and his wife Sheryl of Haverhill, his son James Grant and his wife Sucheera, his daughter Elaine Grant and fiancé Joseph Therrien of Salem; his grandchildren Steven McKanas, Ryan Crooker, Erin (Crooker) Walker, Michael Grant, Jameson Grant, Adam Maggiacomo, Meghan Maggiacomo, Emily Maggicomo; his great grandchildren Nerissa Crooker and Jude Walker.  He also leaves behind his brother-in-law, Donald Tarnowski, and several nieces and nephews.  Robert is predeceased by his wife Genevieve and his brother Gordon Grant.
