Robert E. "Bob" Fleming, III, age 48 loving husband of Nancy (Granfield) Fleming, RN with whom he shared 25 years of marriage, died at home Sunday morning following a courageous battle with cancer.

Born in Lynn the son of the late Robert E. and Anastasia (Dunphy) Fleming, he was raised and educated in Salem graduating from Salem High School in the Class of 1977. Proud of the fact that his grandfather had served in World War I,
Bob entered the United States Air Force in 1982 at the Age of 22.

His tours of duty included Pease Air Force Base, Luke Air Force Base, Operation Desert Storm, and Incirlik Air Force Base during Operation Provide Comfort Turkey. While in Turkey he helped to start both a little league baseball league and a softball league. When he returned from overseas he was stationed at to Hanscom Air Force Base where began a youth softball program.

A highly decorated veteran he was the recipient of the Humanitarian Service Medal, the Defense Kuwait Medal, and the South West Asia Service Medal.

He was honorably discharged after 20 years of service to his country and continued his serviced to the country through the Department of Veteran's Affairs as a case manager. Mr. Fleming was primarily responsibility for assisting returning veterans to become employed in civilian life.


A member of the Disabled American Veterans Post 100 and the Veterans of Foreign War Fidelity Post 1011 in Peabody he was also a member of the Beverly Elks Lodge 1309.

At the core of Mr. Fleming's life and endeavors was his family whom he loved deeply.

In addition to his wife, Mr. Fleming is survived by two children Laura B. Fleming and U.S. MC Lance Corporal Robert M. Fleming of Peabody and his fiancé Ashley Drapeau of Woburn; a brother Thomas M. and his wife Maritza of Lancaster, CA; three sisters Stella andher husband Al Landers and Kathy Higgins all of Federal Way, WA and Carolyn Fleming Oquendo of Lynn and several nieces and nephews.

His funeral will be held on Wednesday at 10:15 A.M. from the Murphy Funeral Home, 85 Federal St., (cor of North ST) Salem to be followed by a funeral Mass at 11:00 A.M in St Thomas the Apostle Church, 1 Margin St., Peabody (on the Salem/Peabody line). Relatives and friends are respectfully invited to attend. Visiting hours will be Tuesday from 4 to 8 P.M. Interment will be in St. Mary's Cemetery, Salem.
