Obituary

Marblehead

Rita Blanche (Tanquay) Creighton, lifelong resident of Marblehead, died at her home on May 12 from complications of a brain tumor. She was the wife of late retired Fire Chief Edward Creighton with whom she shared 55 years of marriage prior to his death in 2002.

Born September, 1922, she was the daughter of William and Delima (Jean) Tanquay. After a brief career as a hairdresser, Rita married and dedicated herself to raising her family. She was known for her cooking, especially baking (something she inherited from her French Canadian mother). She could always be counted on to arrive with "a goodie" when invited somewhere, and over the years to provide many an after school snack for her children and their friends. Many have fond memories of eating at "the Creighton's". She loved to dance and was fortunate to have found a life partner who shared her passion. Together they ballroom danced every chance they got throughout their entire marriage. In recent years she had taken up line dancing and loved spending time with the Line Dancers of Salem. Tuesday afternoon's concert/sing-along with Uncle Sid at Dee's and at JoJo's was also something she looked forward to each week. Although most comfortable at home it didn't stop her from being a world traveler, visiting beautiful places and meeting interesting people; but at the end of a trip, always happy to be home.

A dedicated friend, her kindness and joyfulness were contagious. A positive outlook and attitude even during these past few months was how she lived her life, and until her diagnosis in late October, she really lived life. There was laughter until the very end and in her words "I'm in my 89th year and I've had a great run". She was a genuine kind person and she will be deeply missed.

Rita is survived by her daughter Lee, her son Steve and was predeceased by her daughter Linda. She also leaves a niece Michelle Liming, two nephews John Tanquay, retired U.S. Navy Rear Admiral Peter Marshall, and son-in-law Bruce Mitchell along with their families. She was predeceased by her sister Mary Marshall and her brother Raymond Tanquay.

Honoring her request, services will be private. A memorial will be planned at a future date.

The family wishes to thank all her caregivers and friends who were there for her as well as for the family. In her memory, donations can be made to a charity of choice or in the true spirit of Rita, just have a smile thinking of a memory you shared with her, and "if you get the chance in life to sit it out or dance – just dance."

Rest in Peace Momma Rita
