Rita G. (Belanger) Sweeney, age 95, wife of the late Thomas "Bernie" Sweeney formerly of Chandler Road, Salem more recently of Brooksby Village, Peabody, died Thursday, April 3, 2014 at home. Born in Salem, the daughter of the late Wilfred and Rose (Voyer) Belanger, she was raised in Salem and educated at St Joseph's Academy and the Boston Business School.
Mrs. Sweeney was employed by Sylvania on Boston Street in Salem as a secretary until starting her family. A stay at home mom, she later worked part time at Connolly's Candies and at the Ye Olde Pepper Co in Salem.
She was a loving wife and mother who devoted her life to creating a home for her family. She is survived by three daughters, Patricia Morin, Mary Lou Chaurette and her husband Charles, Elizabeth Griffin and her husband Terry all of Salem; nine grandchildren, and four great grandchildren. In addition to her husband, she is predeceased by her son, James, her son-in law Ron Morin and her four sisters, Beatrice Barbrick, Jeannette McDermott, Jacqueline Wilson and Irene Murphy.
Her funeral will be held on Saturday, April12, 2014 at 10:00 A.M. at the Immaculate Conception Church, 15 Hawthorne Blvd, Salem. Relatives and friends are respectfully invited to attend. Interment will follow at St. Mary's Cemetery Salem. At her family's request, there are no visiting hours.
