IN LOVING MEMORY OF
Richard "Dick"
Warren Lutts
November 19, 1923 – December 13, 2021
Dick Lutts, late of Danvers and Salem, peacefully passed at home surrounded by family; he was holding the hand of his best friend and wife of 74 years, Betty.
Dick was born in Salem, the oldest of three children to the late Carlton G. Lutts and Grace A (Smith) Lutts. He was one of the first children to be baptized in the new edifice of Salem's Tabernacle Church in 1924 and would go on to be a lifelong member of the church.
He was a proud member of the Salem High School Class of 1941, and a fervent supporter of the high school and all its programming in subsequent years. Especially the Football Program having season tickets to all the Witches' football games.
After graduating, Dick would continue his education at Governor Dummer Academy. Like many others of his age, he would enlist in the war effort. In 1943, Dick joined the Navy and was stationed in Fort Sampson, Geneva, New York. There, at an USO dance, he would meet Betty Brewer, the love of his life.
After the war, Dick graduated from the University of Maine at Orono with a BS in Business Administration. He began his career with J.C. Penney in Caribou, Maine. This career would lead Dick and his growing family all over the northeast.
Eventually settling in his hometown of Salem in 1959, Dick worked for Salem Laundry Company for 30 years. He used his business acumen to move the Company from commercial and personal laundry services to coin-operated Laundromats.
After retirement Dick joined Betty in building her successful Shaklee business and helping care for his grandchildren.
Dick was a long time member of the Rotary Club of Salem. He was known for his jokes and for his incredible sales of their annual fundraising calendars. He loved nothing better than to drop into a nephew's business to discuss their goals and business plans. His favorite hobbies were reading, playing tennis, working out at the Salem YMCA, and watching sports on TV.
Dick was predeceased by his brother, Carlton G. Lutts, Jr (Brud), his sister, Phoebe Lutts Burnham and her husband Francis Burnham, his sisters-in-law Dorothy Prettyman and Phyllis Coblio and Nicholas Coblio, and his granddaughter Heather Bennett.
Dick leaves behind his devoted wife, Betty B. Lutts, two sons Peter Lutts (Susan Weiler) of Oxford, Maine and Richard Lutts, Jr. (Louise Mears Lutts) of Haverhill, MA, and two daughters Betsey Lutts-Bennett (Edward Bennett) of Salem and Christine Lutts (Richard Girard) of Salem, and his sister-in-law Nancy B. Lutts of Salem, and 5 granddaughters, Corinne, Rebecca, Grace, Katie and Emily, one great granddaughter, Amy, and many nephews and nieces.
The family thanks the assisted living residence, BrightView Senior Living of Danvers and Care Dimensions for their comfort care and support during Dick's final months.
In lieu of flowers the family requests donations be made to either The Rotary Club of Salem Massachusetts or Tabernacle Church Memorial Fund.
Burial will be private. A Celebrations of Life Service will be held on January 8, 2022, 12 noon, at Tabernacle Congregational Church, UCC, 50 Washington Street, Salem, MA 01970. For more information or online guestbook, please visit www.MurphyFuneralHome.com or call 978-744-0497.
