Obituary

Richard W. Garrett, 78 years, died Monday, January 30, 2023 at NSMC-Salem Hospital following a brief illness.  Born in Washington, DC, he was the son of the late George H. Garrett and the late Alice (Whalley) Dunne.

Richard graduated from St. John's Prep in 1962 and received his Bachelor's Degree from the University of Notre Dame in 1966 and his MBA from Babson College in 1971. He enjoyed a long career in finance at Price Waterhouse, at Digital Equipment Corp, and later at HP Hood in Charlestown as its CFO.

Growing up, Richard spent his summers caddying at the Kernwood Country Club in Salem where he met friends that have remained close through the years. At Kernwood, he learned to love golf and it became his obsession. He played as often as he could and at many different courses around the country. He was also a long-time member of Ferncroft Country Club.

But even more than golf, Richard loved everything Notre Dame, especially football. He truly lived by the motto "God, Country and Notre Dame." He hardly ever missed a game, and he would travel at least once a year to South Bend to meet up with old friends on a Football Saturday.

Richard also enjoyed traveling, reading and socializing with friends and family. In his free time, he volunteered at Senior Care in Gloucester and at Hospice of the North Shore (Care Dimensions) in Danvers.

Richard leaves behind his son, Brett Garrett, and his loving partner, Carol Callahan. He also leaves Emily and Chris Dzengelewski and his two granddaughters, Nova and Willow, whom he loved dearly. He especially enjoyed watching them grow. Richard also leaves many dear friends and will be sorely missed by everyone who knew him.

Richards funeral will be held at St. Thomas the Apostle Church, one Margin St, Peabody on Tuesday at 11:00 am.  His visiting hours will be held prior to the Mass at the Murphy Funeral Home, 85 Federal St, Salem from 9 to 10:30.  Relatives and friends are respectfully invited to attend.  In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Richard's name to St. Thomas the Apostle Church, One Margin St., Peabody, MA  01960.  For additional information or online guest book please call 978-744-0497 or visit www.MurphyFuneralHome.com .
