Richard Gordon Fullerton, 89, of Marblehead, MA died on Nov. 25 after a brief illness. Born in Winthrop, MA in 1928, son of the late Gordon G. and Gladys (Sobey) Fullerton. He was the owner of Fullerton Chevrolet in Winthrop for many years.
He is survived by his wife of 60 years, Carol Upton Fullerton and three daughters; Deborah Johnson of Beverly, and her husband David, Laurie Fullerton of Marblehead, Pamela Fullerton of Newburyport. He is also survived by two grandchildren Gordon and Greta Hertel, also of Newburyport and his brother in law Richard Upton.
He leaves his extended family including his cousins Bernice Hagata of Susanville, Calif. and Sylvia Fullerton of Halifax, N.S. He also leaves several nieces and nephews.
Richard was a proud member of the class of 1946 at Phillips Academy Andover, and a graduate of Boston University. He served three years in the U.S. Coast Guard. He settled in Marblehead in 1960 where he and his family were actively involved in boating at the Corinthian Yacht Club and skiing in Franconia. He is a member of the Gut n' Feathers Club, the Marblehead Yacht Club and the Tuesday night Badminton and Tennis Group.
Richard loved reading and brought that knowledge to his travels with his wife Carol. He was also a great armchair traveler inspiring others to travel more. He was proud of his Scottish heritage and possessed an astute appreciation and understanding for all the places and cultures he had visited and wanted to visit. He also treated his friends and family with the same gracious and thoughtful appreciation.
Visiting hours will be held at the Murphy Funeral Home, 85 Federal St, Salem on Thursday, December 7, 2017 from 4:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. A Memorial Service will be held at the Old North Church, 35 Washington St, Marblehead on Friday, December 8, 2017 at 11:00 a.m. In lieu of flowers, please send a donation to the Edith Dodge Memorial Fund, Inc., c/o National Grand Bank, 91 Pleasant Street, Marblehead, MA 01945.
