Richard A. "Big Rich" Jodrie, Sr., age 73, of Salem died unexpectedly on Monday morning in North Shore Medical Center, Salem. He and his wife Cecelia (Bookholz) Jodrie would have celebrated 55 years of marriage this year.

Born in Salem the son of the late Walter and Mary (Rosa) Jodrie he was raised and educated in Peabody at the Carroll School in Peabody. Once he completed his education, Mr. Jodrie joined the United States Air Force and proudly served his country. During that time he and his wife and married and began their family.

Once discharged, he returned to civilian life as a leather worker in Peabody until becoming established as a self employed painter for many years. During the last 15 years of his career, Mr. Jodrie was employed by the City of Salem as the caretaker of Winter Island until retiring in 1997.

A real family man, he was affectionately known as "Papa" by his grandchildren and great grandchildren. He loved the ocean, fishing and camping.

In addition to his wife, Mr. Jodrie is survived by four children, Cheryl Wilson and her companion Ray Hamilton of Peabody, Richard Jodrie, Jr. and his wife Tina of Salem, Donna Perry and her husband Dave of Salem and Ann Marie Coogan and her husband Robert of Lynn; a brother John Jodrie of Rowley; a sister Lorraine Ortins of ME; six grandchildren Marie, Melissa, Stafanie, Renee, Jonathan, and David; two great grandchildren Kayla and Kayle and several nieces and nephews.

He was predeceased by two brothers Walter and Robert Jodrie and a sister Connie Mello.

His funeral services will be held on Wednesday evening at 7:00 PM in the Murphy Funeral Home, 85 Federal St., Salem. Relatives and friends are respectfully invited to attend. Visiting hours will be prior to the services from 5:00PM to 7:00PM. Interment will be private. Those who wish may make memorial contributions to the American Diabetes Association, P.O.
