Obituary

We are saddened to announce that Reyno Amelio Giallongo, 98, of Beverly, MA passed away on March 23 at Lahey Burlington Hospital after suffering a fall in his home. Born in Lawrence, Reyno was a true adventure man. He left home at age 14 to join the Triple Cs (Civilian Conservation Corp.), then at 16, with his brother's birth certificate in hand, joined the Army so that he could see and travel the world. He was a career military man giving over 20 years of service to his country, serving during WWII, the Korean Conflict, and the Vietnam Era. He got his wish to see the world as he was stationed in Germany, Panama, Korea, California, and Hawaii at Fort Shafter where he survived the attack on Pearl Harbor. He was immensely proud of his military service.

For Reyno age was just a number he and refused to slow down. He was an avid skier into his late 80s after having taught his extended family to ski and share his passion for the sport. He was always a devoted fan of ballet and theatre, and he would never miss an opportunity to go into Boston or New York to see a show, a favorite of his being Swan Lake. During the summer, you could find him working away in his garden or lying in the sun at Salisbury Beach. Salisbury Beach was always a special place to Reyno, and spending summers there was a Giallongo tradition that he passed down to his family, having spent happy summers there as a child. A final joy was playing poker with his brothers-in-law and friends, where playing for pennies turned into a high stakes Vegas competition.

He is survived by his wife of 37 years, Linda Giallongo (Paluzzi), their son Matthew and his partner Joshua Downs, and numerous nieces and nephews. From his previous marriage Reyno leaves children Reyno Giallongo, Jr. and Kimberly McMahon. He is preceded in death by his parents Angelo and Beatrice (Arranzio) (Lawrence, MA), siblings: Serafino, Maria, and Dominic, and his former wife Lilian Giallongo. The family would like to offer a special thanks to Alfred and Kathleen Paluzzi, Anthony and Anne Paluzzi, and their families, John Marletta, Thomas Marletta, and June Kelley for the special care and friendship that they gave Reyno in his final years.

Anyone wishing to pay their respects to the family and celebrate Reyno are invited to services to be held at Murphy's Funeral Home in Salem, MA. His wake will be held on Thursday, March 30, 2023, from 4pm-8pm and a funeral mass at St. Mary's Star of the Sea Church, Beverly, MA, on Friday March 31, 2023, at 10:00am. In lieu of flowers the family is requesting donations be made in Reyno's memory to either the Wounded Warrior Project (support.woundedwarriorproject.org) or the Veteran Services of Bedford, MA (VA Bedford Healthcare System 200 Springs Rd. Bedford, MA 01730).
