Retired Salem Firefighter Harold M. "Harry" Moore of Salem died Saturday afternoon in North Shore Medical Center, Salem. He was predeceased by his wife and love of his life of 51 years Barbara A. "Nicky" Moore, R.N. on July 2, 2003.
Born in Swampscott the son of the late Milton I and Cornelia (Bartlett) Moore, he was educated in Swampscott schools. A graduate of Swampscott High School, he received his varsity letters in both baseball and basketball, having served as the student sports manager for both teams.
Immediately following his graduation from Swampscott High School, Mr. Moore joined the United States Army and proudly served the country until being discharged as a Corporal three years later in 1949. At the outbreak of the Korean War he was recalled and again answered the call to serve the country, this time in the Army Military Police.
Following his discharge, Mr. Moore was appointed to the Salem Fire Department by then Mayor Francis Collins and sworn in by former Mayor, Judge Samuel Zoll. He was a member of Salem Fire Local 1780 I.A.F.F for over 33 years and served the City of Salem until his retirement in 1988. He also maintained a part-time job as a driver with Evan Flowers in Peabody for many years.
Active and dedicated to his family and children's activities he had been very involved in Salem Little League Baseball. He was especially active with the boosters as well as providing transportation to many games, and games in Cooperstown, NY. Mr. Moore later became involved with Salem High School Boosters and the Peabody Men's Softball League. He enjoyed sports and was an avid Redsox and Patriots fan.
Mr. Moore is survived by four children, Donna Bimbo, L.P.N and her husband Peter of Salem, Susan McLean and her husband Retired Dover, NH Fire Department Captain J. David McLean of Rochester, NH, John Moore and his wife Debra of Bradford, MA, Richard Moore and his wife Sharon of Peabody, MA; seven grandchildren Amy Kesselman and her husband Jeffrey of Lynn, MA, Stacey Sherman and her husband Robert of Somerville, MA, Andrew McLean of Gorham, ME, Matthew McLean of Rochester NH, Sarah Moore of Bradford, MA, Bryan Moore of Bradford, MA and Richard "Ricky" Moore, Jr. of Peabody, MA; three sisters Edith Purdy of Danvers, MA, Ernestine Ireson and her husband Lorenzo of Rye, NH, Betty Lindquist of Danvers, MA; a sister in law Florence Martin and her husband S. Charles of Clearwater, FL ; a cousin Graham McKenzie of Marblehead who was like a brother to him growing up.
He was predeceased by a sister and three brothers in law, Bernetta Guilmette and her husband Roger, Claude Purdy and Gus Lindquist.
His funeral will be held on Friday, May 16 at 10:00 A.M. in the Murphy Funeral Home, 85 Federal St., (cor of North St) Salem. Relatives and friends are respectfully invited to attend. Visiting hours will be Thursday from 4 to 8 P.M. Interment will be in Swampscott Cemetery.
