Obituary

Raymond R Kearns, Sr., of Marblehead, entered into rest on March 14, 2016, at the age of 98. He had a long life well lived. Ray was born in Salem, MA to George E. and Caroline (Wilson) Kearns. He was the husband of the late Ruth (Mahoney) Kearns, with whom they shared 59 years of marriage.

A graduate of Peabody High School, Ray was a proud patriot who joined the Army National Guard from 1935-1938 and then served in the U.S. Navy, Naval Air Patrol throughout World War II.

After returning home from the War, Ray and Ruth raised their family of 3 children in Marblehead, while Ray worked as a machinist at A.C. Lawrence. In his spare time he enjoyed trips on the water in his boat "Grampy's Girl", named for his oldest grandchild. As a former member of the Boston Yacht Club, Ray spent many relaxing afternoons on his boat, and impressed his grandkids with fishing and a great view for Marblehead's fireworks.

He spent three very good years at the John Bertram House in Salem, where he found a new audience for his stories and he often enjoyed sitting in the sun on the deck, ready to greet the next person that came by. His long and full life was fueled by his independence, strong opinions, and motivation to keep moving.

In addition to his wife, Ruth, Ray was predeceased by his daughter, Suzanne (Kearns) Browne, and siblings George and Mary Kearns.

He is survived by his daughter, Sandra, and her husband Peter Bowen, and son Raymond Jr., all of Marblehead, as well as his son-in-law James Browne of Worcester. He also leaves five grandchildren, Jennifer and Matthew Bowen, Caitlin and Seamus Browne, and Colin Kearns. He was lucky enough to be a great grandfather to Emma, Grace, and Madison. In addition he leaves behind four step-grandchildren, their children, and many beloved nieces and nephews.

A private graveside service, with military honors, was held. Arrangements were by Murphy Funeral Home 85 Federal St Salem, MA. For further information or on-line guestbook please visit MurphyFuneralHome.com or call 978-744 0497.
