Raymond L. Gregoire, age 83, loving husband of Artie (Tgettis) Gregoire, died Thursday March 12, 2015. Born in Salem, son of the late Joseph and Marie A. (Letourneau) Gregoire, he was raised on Perkins Street in Salem. He attended St. Joseph's School and graduated from Salem High School in the class of 1951. He played sports for Salem High School and was the quarterback for the football team and shortstop for the baseball team.
Ray entered the United States Marine Reserves and following his High School graduation, he served in the Marine Corp during the Korean War. Upon returning home, he went to work for Sylvania for several years. Ray joined the Salem Fire Department in 1967. His career spanned 25 years retiring as a lieutenant from the Department in 1992. He also enjoyed woodworking and was a skilled carpenter that enjoyed making built in book cases as well as repair work on stairways and other finish work.
Mr. Gregoire enjoyed being in Whitefield, New Hampshire where he and his wife were owners and operators of the Forest Lake Cottages. Their entire family enjoyed all of the family gatherings at the Cottages over the years.
Surviving him in addition to his loving wife with whom he shared 63 years of marriage are his children, John Gregoire of Salem, Jean Walsh and her husband John "Jack" of Salem, Ellen Costa and her husband John of New Hampshire, Gail Avery and her husband Joel of Danvers, his sister Loretta Dixie of Danvers, his grandchildren Justin, Joshua and Joel Walsh, Anthony and Dominic Boisvert, Nicholas and Cassandra Avery, one great grandson Bryson Raymond Walsh and many nieces and nephews. He was also the brother of the late Alfred, Emile, Robert and Roland Gregoire, Alice Popielski, Bella Wheelock, Pauline Harris and Theresa Tgettis.
His Funeral Services will be held from the Murphy Funeral Home, 85 Federal St, (cor of North St.) Salem on Tuesday March 17, 2015 at 9:15 A.M. followed by Funeral Services at St. Vasilios Greek Orthodox Church, 5 Paleologos St., Peabody at 10:00 A.M. Visiting hours at the Murphy Funeral Home on Monday March 16, 2015 from 4:00 P.M. to 8:00 P.M. Relatives and friends are respectfully invited to attend. Burial in Harmony Grove Cemetery, Salem.
