IN LOVING MEMORY OF
Peter Louis
Koff
November 26, 1940 – September 11, 2021
Peter L. Koff, 80, of Cambridge, MA, passed away peacefully on September 11, 2021 at his home for the last five years, the Brudnick Center for Living in Peabody, MA.
Peter was born in New York City, NY, on November 26, 1940, son of the late Murray and Sylvia Koff of Scarsdale, NY. He is survived by his beloved wife, Virginia (Ginger) Love; his daughter, Jessie Sheehan and her husband, Matthew; his son, Andrew Koff and his wife, Sarah; his stepson, Timothy Love; his stepson, Christopher Love and his wife, Becky; his stepson, Andrew and his wife, Tiffany; his brother, Michael Koff and his wife, Barbara; his brother, Larry Koff and his wife, Barbara; his four grandchildren; his six step grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews. He is predeceased by his late wife, Marguerite Tod Koff and his sister, Gail Koff.
After graduating from Scarsdale High School in 1958, Peter attended the University of Virginia where he received his B.A. degree in 1962. He continued on to the University of Virginia School of Law, graduating with his L.L.B. degree in 1965, followed by service in the Coast Guard Reserve.
Peter devoted his legal career to environmental and land use law and civil litigation for nearly 40 years. Prior to entering private practice in 1981, he spent 10 years in government service working for the City of Boston Law Department and the U.S. Department of Interior. Peter was a driving force behind a number of important environmental-related legal decisions in Boston representing a variety of municipal and community group clients. A notable case was a 1983 lawsuit aimed at stopping discharges of raw sewage into Boston Harbor, a decision that helped catalyze the cleanup of the polluted harbor.
His tireless work to address environmental issues associated with infrastructure projects throughout Boston eventually earned him the nickname "Mad Dog." He represented the communities of East Boston and Winthrop to oppose Massport's planned expansion of Logan Airport in the 1990s - 2000s based on the potential for negative environmental and health impacts to the surrounding communities. He served as legal counsel and on the Board of Directors of many local organizations he was passionate about, including Move Massachusetts, the Cambridge Pedestrian Committee, Airport Impact Relief (AIR Inc) and the Logan Airport Community Advisory Committee.
Peter was a devoted father and husband throughout his life. After the death of his first wife in 1990, he raised their two kids as a single parent in Newton while balancing a busy career with his many interests, from running and hiking to following University of Virginia sports. He loved to travel, spending time exploring the coasts and mountains of Europe and the Pacific Northwest. He was happiest in nature, no matter if it was the high alpine meadows of the Cascade mountains, the trails of the White Mountains, or the beaches of Cape Cod. Peter had a real 'joie de vivre' and lived a full life in a large circle of friends and family.
After surviving a stroke in 2009, Peter's life transformed and he spent his later years in Cambridge with his loving wife Ginger. He loved to watch UVA sports, read the newspaper and spend time with his kids and grandkids.
A memorial service in celebration of his life will be held at a later date with details forthcoming.
