Paul J. Shanahan, age 78, of Salem died Friday, August 8, 2008, at Salem Hospital surrounded by his loving family. He was the devoted husband of Ruth L. Shanahan, with whom he shared 58 years of marriage.
Born in Boston the son of the late James and Elizabeth (Palmer) Shanahan, he was educated in Lynn Schools, graduating from Lynn Classical High School. He spent many years employed in both the leather and automobile industry and retired from Britton's Auto Parts.
He was an avid Red Sox and Patriots fan. Mr. Shanahan also enjoyed reading Western novels but the true focus of his interest was centered on his family.
He is survived by four children Jim and his wife Anne Shanahan of New Market, NH, Donna and her husband Phil Currier of Beverly, Kathy and her husband Skip Tobey of Salem, NH and Debbie and her husband Jayson Marshall of Salem; eight grandchildren Michael Shanahan, Brian and Melissa Currier, Danielle and her husband Dave Chandler, Jonathan and Katlin Tobey and Shanna and Mindy Marshall; one great grandchild Christopher Currier and his nieces and nephews.
His funeral services will be held Sunday, August 17 at 3:00 P.M. in the Murphy Funeral Home, 85 Federal St., (cor of North St) Salem. Relatives and friends are respectfully invited to attend. Visitation will be immediately before the funeral Sunday from 2:00 P.M. to 3:00 P.M. Interment will be private. Those who wish may make memorial contributions to a charity of their choice.
