Marblehead...
Paul D. Johnston, 81, a lifelong resident of Marblehead passed away suddenly at home on Sunday, October 19, 2014. He was the husband of Patricia (Pym) Johnston with who he shared 52 years of marriage. Born in Marblehead, he was the son of the late Norman H. Johnston, a Marblehead Police Officer, and Lillian May (Horne) Johnston.
Paul was a graduate of the Marblehead High School Class of 1952. After serving in the U.S. Navy from 1953 to 1957, Paul graduated from the Wentworth Institute of Technology, Boston with a degree in Electronics helping to set a trend by which his two sons, two nephews, and father in-law graduated as well. Paul then went on to work for the New England Telephone Company for 40 years before retiring.
Paul was an avid do-it-yourselfer and enjoyed traveling, sailing, and everything "Marblehead." He was an active observer of town politics and for many years attending the weekly Selectmen's meetings at Abbot Hall and Annual Town Meeting. Paul had been an active volunteer with Troop 11, Boy Scouts of America, and was a member of the Philanthropic Masonic Lodge. He was an avid Boston sports fan, but was first and foremost a Bruins fan having played High School Hockey, pick-up games at Bobby's Pond as a youth, and skating at local arenas right-up to this year. Paul was happy to see the Bruins break their 39-year Stanley Cup drought back in 2011, and of course a few Patriots Superbowl wins didn't hurt either. He will be most remembered as a loving and dedicated husband, father, and grandfather.
In addition to his wife, Paul is survived by his two sons and three grandchildren, Norman Johnston and his wife Nell (Moore) and their two sons Aidan and Ryan of Shrewsbury, and Major Donald Johnston, USAF (Retired) and his wife Diana and their daughter Kristen of San Antonio Texas. He is the brother of David Johnston, USN (Retired) and Celia Johnston both of Marblehead, and the late Norma (Johnston) Regan. Paul also leaves several nephews and a niece, and many extended family members.
A Memorial Service will be held at the Old North Church Marblehead on Saturday, November 1st at 1 PM. Relatives and friends respectfully invited. A private burial for immediate family will be held at a future date. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations in Paul's memory be made to the American Heart Association, 20 Speen Street, Framingham, MA 01701-4688.
