SALEM — Paul J. Higgins, 76, of Salem, devoted husband of Janice (Tivnan) Higgins for 51 years, died Thursday, Dec. 9, 2010 in the Lafayette Nursing Home, Marblehead.
Born and raised in Peabody the son of the late Michael and Mary (Walsh) Higgins, he graduated from Peabody High School, Class of 1952. He received both his bachelor's degree and Master's degree from Salem State College.
He was employed for 38 years with the City of Salem Public school system. He began as an English teacher, became a coach, and served as both Athletic Director and assistant Principal. Mr. Higgins is a member of the Salem High School Hall of Fame as well as the Peabody High School Hall of Fame.
In 1982, he was named as the Massachusetts Athletic Director of the Year. Most of all he enjoyed his family, their accomplishments, being a grandfather, playing tennis, and practicing his faith.
In addition to his wife, Mr. Higgins is survived by four children, Maryellen Wioncek and her husband Joseph of Beverly, Thomas Higgins and his wife Krissy of Georgetown, James Higgins and his wife Jill of Rumson, N.J. and Mark and his wife Michelle of Peabody; a brother, Leo Higgins of Peabody; a sister, Judith Baker and her husband Thomas of Dover. He was the proud grandfather of 13 grandchildren, Marykate, JP, Jillian, Joe V, Jake, Carly, Brooke, Emma, Jack, Laura, Marcus, Ty and Addy and many nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by a brother, Colonel John Higgins and his wife Nancy.
ARRANGEMENTS: His funeral will be held on Tuesday, Dec. 14, at 8:15 a.m. from the Murphy Funeral Home, 85 Federal St., (corner of North Street), Salem, to be followed by a funeral Mass at 9 a.m. at St. Anne Church, 292 Jefferson Ave., Salem. Visiting hours will be Monday from 3 to 7 p.m. in the Murphy Funeral Home, 85 Federal St, (corner of North Street), Salem. Internment will be in St. Mary's Cemetery, Salem.
