Salem, MA – Paul R. Coffin, age 67, loving husband of Doris (Martin) Coffin, passed away Saturday, February 18, 2017 at Salem Hospital after a 7 year struggle with esophageal cancer which left him unable to eat or drink since 2009. Paul was raised in Salem. Shortly after graduating high school he enlisted in the United States Army and served in Vietnam where he rose to the rank of sergeant. After an honorable discharge, Paul returned stateside and became a licensed optician, a career he would enjoy for over 45 years.
Paul was a dedicated father and husband. He adored his daughter Christine and son-in-law Danny and would tell her often "Christine, you are the best daughter anyone could have". He was active in the Salem Boy Scouts, and enjoyed coaching youth soccer. He was an avid reader who loved old time country music and biannual trips to Foxwoods with his wife Doris.
Paul is survived by his loving wife Doris Coffin with whom he enjoyed 48 years of marriage, as well as his daughter Christine Giovannucci and her husband Danny, of Salem (formerly of Watertown), his son Paul Lewis Coffin of San Diego, CA, his brother William Coffin, his sisters Elaine Coffin and Susan Coffin, his sister-in-law Rose Anderson, his brother-in-law James Anderson, several nieces and nephews and a large extended family of relatives and friends in the optical business.
Visiting hours for Paul will take place on Wednesday February 22, 2017 from 4 to 8PM at the Murphy Funeral Home, 85 Federal St. (Corner of North St.), Salem, MA 01970. A funeral service will take place Thursday February 23, 2017 at 11 AM, also at the Murphy Funeral Home. Interment will take place at St. Mary's Cemetery, 226 North St. Salem, MA 01970.
