Obituary

PATRICK JOSEPH NALLY

Patrick Joseph Nally of Marblehead, husband of Attorney Elaine M. Clark, Danvers, Massachusetts, as a result of complications from surgery in October 2011. He was the son of the late Joseph A. Nally and Margaret "Peggy" Bane Nally.

Born in Salem, he was raised in Peabody and attended Peabody Schools, and North Shore Community College. He served in the United States Army during the Vietnam War Era and was Honorably Discharged in 1973. He had a lifelong love of Military History, and was perhaps the History Channel's most loyal viewer. He was a student of World War Two. He had supreme admiration for the "greatest generation". If he saw a World War Two veteran, he always made sure to shake his hand, thank him and of course, chat about the war.

Besides his wife of twenty-two years, Patrick is survived by his daughter, Paige Eileen Nally, 17, a Junior at Marblehead High School. As is the old "Irish" way, Patrick did not often tell Paige how proud he was of her; but he told everyone else who would listen.

Like his father and brothers, Patrick was a Mason and was a member of Local 3, Allied Bricklayers and Craftsmen, Charlestown, Massachusetts and worked on many interesting projects over the years. His "inner Felix Unger" resulted in precise, detailed work.

Patrick loved to travel with his wife and daughter, and especially with their "summer family" the Hope and Mark Williamson Family of Sterling, . They traveled to most of the New England States, New York, the Outer Banks of North Carolina (most summers) and everyone's favorite to Hawaii in 2005. It was quite a group, usually including baby sitters, various nieces and nephews, even dogs, and if the destination was in New England, oftentimes joined at some point by members of the Nardella, George, and Clark families, who were not already part of the original Expedition. There were also many memorable trips with his wife's extended family to Bermuda, Florida and North Carolina. Another travel tradition was a Boys Weekend with his good friends Rick Nardella and Peter George both of Salem. They usually planned their trips around a Patriots Game and visited Miami, Tampa, New Orleans, and San Francisco over the years. He always made sure to have a picture taken at the game, to show his wife, that they actually did go to the game!

Patrick was a former member of the Elks, Salem Chapter, and the Danvers Fish and Game Club. He loved deep sea fishing, and fished over the years in New England, North Carolina, Barbados, Hawaii and Mexico. He was also a certified Scuba diver, and always enjoyed at least one diving outing during family vacations. And of course, no trip was complete without a trip to a Battleship, Battlefield or other place of military history.

Patrick loved family traditions, and enjoyed many wonderful holidays, and most of all he loved a good meal, holiday, party or just a Tuesday night. One of the last things he spoke with his wife about at Hospice was a memorable dinner(when they were first dating) at the home of dear friends Cathie and Michael Tassinari of Peabody, Massachusetts and a lovely party they attended there this past summer.

In addition to his wife
and daughter, Patrick is also survived by his brothers and sisters and in-laws, Martin and Cheryl Nally of Manchester-by-the-Sea, Massachusetts, Catherine and Robert Mirra, of Florida, and Lynn, Massachusetts, Joseph Nally and Debra Henry of Orland, Maine, Ellen and Ed Brown and Michael Nally all of Hingham. He was predeceased by his sister-in-law F. Elizabeth "Liz" Nally of Hingham in 2009. Also surviving is his Uncle, John Bane of Salem, Massachusetts. He also had six nephews and two nieces, and cousins from Ireland to California. He had a special place in his heart for his niece, Jennifer Mirra of Lynn, whom he often called "Paige's older sister.
Patrick was very blessed to have so many wonderful friends and family in his life. They were all a source of comfort during the difficult weeks following his surgery.

In the 1950's movie,
Auntie Mame said "…life is a banquet and most poor suckers are starving." Pat enjoyed the banquet and lived a wonderful, full life with the people he loved and admired all around him. He will be greatly missed and remembered with love and laughter.

His funeral will be held on Friday, January 6, 2012 at 10 AM from the Murphy Funeral Home, 85 Federal St., (cor of North St) Salem, to be followed by a funeral Mass at 11:00 AM in St Thomas the Apostle Church, 260 North St, Salem.
