Patricia A. (Munson) Murphy, age 79, wife of the late Peabody Firefighter Henry C. Murphy of Peabody died Thursday evening surrounded by her family in the Shaughnessy Kaplan Rehabilitation Hospital.
Born, raised and educated in Salem, the daughter of the late Roy and Anna L. (Murphy) Munson, she was a member of the Mack Park Association for many years. Shortly after her gradation from Salem High School, where she played basketball, Mrs. Murphy married her late husband, moved to Peabody and began a family.
A stay at home mom, she volunteered as a political activist and became extremely active in the community serving with the red cross and local politics. Mrs. Murphy was a staunch supporter of Peabody City Councilor Joyce Spiliotis especially during her campaigns by going "door to door" in the neighborhoods of Peabody . She also volunteered on the campaigns of Congressman Nichols Mavroules.
She also volunteered at the Peter A. Torigian Life Center in Peabody for many years serving on the board of directors. In addition to her many civic activities Mrs Murphy took great pleasure in escorting her many friend to adventures at Foxwood casino.
One of her greatest joys was playing cards and games with her grandchildren as they grew up. An avid Red Sox fan, Mrs. Murphy enjoyed being on her front porch listening to the ball games
She is survived by two daughters Anna L. and her husband James Coughlin of Peabody and Donna and her husband Paul Gode of Brainard, MN; a sister Doris Swenbeck of Fl; five grandchildren Kevin, Shanda, and Jason Coughlin and Joycelin Kilmer and Jayme Arevilla; two great grandchildren Anna Bella and _Micah.
Her funeral services will be held on Wednesday at 12 Noon in the Murphy Funeral Home, 85 Federal St., (cor of North St) Salem. Visiting hours will be Tuesday from 6 to 8 P.M. and Wednesday morning from 10 AM to 12 Noon. Interment will be in Greenlawn Cemetery, Salem.
