Orlando (Al) DiPaolo, age 88, of Salem passed away on March 25, 2016 at the Sawtell Hospice House in Reading, MA after a courageous battle with vasculitis. He was the beloved husband of Joan I (Mahoney) DiPaolo with whom he shared 56 years of marriage at the time of her death in 2010.
Born in Portland, Maine, the son of George and Minnie DiPaolo, he resided in Beverly and Salem for the majority of his life. He entered the U.S. Army in 1946, served in occupied Japan and was honorably discharged in 1947. He was educated at Portland Junior College (currently University of Maine) and Boston University (Class of 1951).
His career began at Mutual of Omaha as a claims examiner, onto New England Life Insurance Company in various supervisory positions as well as senior analyst and finishing at Met Life Boston as a consultant for the state insurance legislation.
As a young man he loved to sled and ice skate. Later in life he enjoyed reading mystery novels, doing crossword puzzles and gardening. He also loved vacationing with his wife at their summer home in Naples, Maine and subsequent yearly visits to Ogunquit, Maine.
He is survived by his daughter Kathie O'Connell and her husband Bill O'Connell of Danvers, MA; a brother George DiPaolo Jr. and his wife Louise of Buxton, ME; brother-in-law Paul Mahoney of Maryland and many nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his wife Joan; his son Mark DiPaolo; and his daughter NancyAnn Barry. He was also predeceased by siblings; Marie Ryan, John DiPaolo, Rosario DiPaolo, Anthony DiPaolo, and brother-in-law Donald R. Mahoney of Kennebunkport, ME.
His funeral Services will be held privately. Those who wish may make memorial contributions to the Sawtell Hospice House, Reading, MA.
