Norman T. Thomas, Jr. age 91, husband of Bobby (Titsworth) Smith Thomas, of Marblehead died in the Devereux House Home Sunday afternoon following a brief illness.
Born in Nashua, NH the son of the late Norman T. and Florence (Light) Thomas, Sr. he was raised and educated in Marblehead and was graduated from Marblehead High School in the Class of 1936. He then joined the Army ROTC and received his Bachelor's degree in engineering from M.I T in the class of 1940.
During World War II, Mr. Thomas served in the United States Army as a Captain. A decorated veteran, his involvement in the Invasion of Normandy included the responsibility of diffusing unexploded bombs along the beach. These responsibilities eventually took him through France and into Belgium and Germany.
Following his discharge, Mr. Thomas became employed by Raytheon in Waltham where he was employed for over 30 years until his retirement in the mid 1960's.
Mr. Thomas was an active member of St. Andrew's Church, where he had been the Treasurer for several years. An avid sailor he had also been a member of the Eastern Yacht Club.
In addition to his wife, Mr. Thomas is survived by two children, Bruce Thomas and his wife Joyce of Beverly and Martha Malanowski and her husband Jeffrey of Dayton, Ohio; a sister Miriam "Mid" Thomas Hammond of Marblehead; four grandchildren Christopher, Matthew, Peter and Sarah; three great grandchildren and many nieces and nephews.
He was predeceased by two wives, Ellen (Murphy) Thomas and Barbara (Faden) (Murfitt) Thomas and a sister Jean Osborne.
His funeral will be held on Thursday at 10:00 A.M. in St. Andrew's Church, 135 Lafayette St., Marblehead, MA 01945. Relatives and friends are respectfully invited to attend. Visiting hours will be Wednesday from 5:00 P.M. to 8:00 P.M. in the Murphy Funeral Home, 85 Federal St., (cor of North ST) Salem. Interment will be on Thursday at 2:00 P.M in North Cemetery, Wayland.
